I would like to try roasting a chicken for the first time but I do not have a roasting pan or other such aparatus nor do I intend to buy one in the near future. I read the thread further down about roasting chickens and there were a few suggestions for using a cast iron skillet or maybe a broiler pan? I have a 12.5 x 9" oblong cast iron skillet grill and a broiler pan...would one or both of these work? If so, techniques for sucess? I would really like to work with what I have instead of buy new things that I will not use often. Also, I liked one persons idea about placing potatos on the bottom so soak up the drippings...would that work in the cast iron or broiler pan.
