I've had breakfasts all over the country. Barring gourmet places and elaborate Sunday brunch, my expectations are simple, and not particularly high. Recently I had breakfast - and then many breakfasts - at Rise and Dine on Finley between Lombard and Downer's grove (no dinner... they close at 3 pm). They take a chef's attention to what they make, using sometimes unique recipes (e.g the pancakes!!), serving food precisely to order (e.g eggs & firmness). The servings are amazingly generous at reasonable prices. The staff is friendly and exceptionally service oriented. If you order something, and they wonder if you know what you've done (like my order of blintzes with sour cream), they come and explain the nature of their recipe.
My benchmark for delis is Zingermans in Ann Arbor, MI (as it it for hundreds of others & several magazines). Rise and Dine is my new benchmark for the everyday breakfast.
