This morning brought the sad news that Cecilia Chiang left us today. She celebrated her 100th birthday last month. Her pioneering restaurant, The Mandarin, elevated the status of Chinese cuisine in the United States. https://vimeo.com/ondemand/soulofaban...

A chance meeting and opportunity to renew our acquaintance in 2009 was one of the highlights of the Five Happiness chowdown and going-away party for Dave MP. https://www.chowhound.com/post/happin... One of her favorite dishes there is the Lions head meatballs. https://www.chowhound.com/post/sfs-ha...

Three years ago, I was having lunch at Royal Feast in Millbrae when Ms. Chiang and entourage arrived for a private party. Later she would bring Alice Waters and Michael Bauer here, as memorialized in the photo displayed at the restaurant. Cooking for her inspired Chef Liu to introduce more detailed presentations. https://www.chowhound.com/post/royal-...

Annually during peak asparagus season, I make her recipe for asparagus salad with sesame dressing. Next spring's will be poignant in her absence.

Chiang’s pioneering restaurant, the Mandarin, brought new levels of sophistication to Chinese cuisine in America.
