There's a little Italian deli called Salpino's on the south side of Merrick Road in a little strip next to the Delta Gas station at the border of Oceanside and Baldwin. They make pretty good stuff, including the best fresh mozzerella that I've tried since moving to Nassau, some of the best roasted peppers I've ever eaten, and other specialties which I haven't tried yet.
One thing that is superlative is the rice ball. It's a big ball of a creamy rice, almost a risotto consistency but not quite, mixed with a little tomato and cheese. It's kind of an orange color, and strangely compelling. There's a little bit of sauce with just a tiny smidgen of meat and a half-dozen peas in the center, less than one most often sees in rice balls but actually better suited to the richer rice mixture. The breaded crust is of a proper thickness, has reasonable durability (for the journey home), and crisps up nicely in the toaster-oven. My wife and I have had them for lunch the last couple of Saturdays. They cost $2.50.
