Another Rhubarb Question: Hothouse vs. Not

Pia | Mar 27, 2005 07:16 PM

I'm looking forward to making my next rhubarb pie-- possibly with pear or blueberry--and have been looking around for good rhubarb. I've been surprised by the price differences between rhubarb at different supermarkets: $1.99/lb. for hothouse rhubarb at Safeway, $4.99/lb. at Whole Foods, and $6.99/lb. at Draeger's. (None available at the San Mateo farmers' market just yet.)

Is there a quality difference in the rhubarb commensurate to the price difference between Safeway's hothouse and Draeger's "cherry" rhubarb? Is it a bad thing that the rhubarb (at all 3 places) comes in separated stalks with green tops, somewhat dried out at the broken ends?
