l.a. hound just back from a camping trip up the coast. thought i'd post a few experiences.


sea fresh "the fish market"-3600 s. harbor blvd. channel island harbor, oxnard.805.985.5155. lunch here:very good bowl of clam chowder. creamy white base, buttery tasting. a light handful of clam pieces, potatoes, celery. a fair/good shrimp poboy(don't mistake this w/anything you'd find in new orleans). the lightly coated shrimp a bit overfried, topped w/cole slaw. it sort of worked when splashed w/some tabasco. ultra-clean outdoor patio tables overlooking the harbor(similiar to pt. loma seafood in san diego, casual seafood)

sal's mexican inn-1450 s. oxnard blvd. oxnard.805.483.9015. dinner here:cal-mex-ground beef-orange cheese specialties. ordered the gr.beef taco/cheese enchilada combo. fried taco shells(think tito's tacos in los angeles). enchilada was saucy & cheesy. crispy tortilla chips. decent, satisfying gringo-mex, open since 1948.

santa barbara:

brophy bros.-119 harbor way, s.b. 805.966.4418. lunch here:shared bowl of chowder(lightly creamy w/deep clam flavor, lots of clams,
potatoes,celery),beer boiled shrimp(served in a pleasant broth spiced w/bay leaf, cloves, allspice), dungeness crab platter(sweet & impressively chilled temp) , oyster shooters(briny w/healthy blast of horseradish in cocktail sauce). everything tasted fresh & was thoughtfully prepared. helpful young waitstaff. total before tip w/2 iced teas was $34.75

la tolteca mexicatessan-616 e. haley street, s.b. 805.963.0847. using a tip from hound tom swift(thanks!), we picked up a few small tamales to reheat in foil back at the campfire:pork & beef (both in good red chile sauce) , green chile & cheese. all very good w/tender, fragrant masa & flavorful fillings. our favorite was the pork. $2.50 each.

super cucas-626 w. micheltorena st., s.b. while i'm not crazy about their overstuffed burritos, i am crazy for the la michoacana brand paletas in their freezer. the creamiest flavors are my favorite: coconut, pina colada, arroz con leche. worth pulling off the 101 for. $.99 each.
