Was intrigued by the Mondo Taco concept and menu of 'fusion tacos'.
This spot is easy to get to and has seating outside and inside. You order and a server brings it to your table and your order is designated by countries of the world.
The owner has been quoted in Eater LA as saying that the Taj Mahal shrimp taco is his favorite, so of course that is where I started!
The Taj comes as 2 nicely fried coconut shrimps with curry sauce and red bell peppers. The homemade tortilla is very small, only about 15-20% larger than a silver dollar pancake. It is also thick and kind of weird for a tortilla! Tacos come without cabbage or lettuce, which, IMHO ain't right!
My SO started with the Fancy Fish (all their fish is Vietnamese sole), grilled fish with grilled poblano, pico de gallo and tasty cilantro creme!
we also shared a watermelon fresca, which was a bit too sweet.
As served, one taco will not satisfy one's hunger, so we ordered more.
This time it was Crispy fish for him and Tokyo Shrimp for me. Since we
need either cabbage or lettuce with our tacos, we ordered a side of
HORSERADISH cabbage! It was literally cabbage plus a lot of horseradish of the HOT Atomic kind, not a sauce at all. We left much of it.
The Tokyo shrimp was deep fried shrimp with avo and a spicy mayo.
All their sauces are drizzled on lightly. The shrimp on both my shrimp
tacos was done perfectly; the shrimp was fresh and juicy, with the coating
This Crispy Tempura fish had blackened onion with garlic mayo lightly drizzled.
It was tasty, but a little dry.
It was a worthy food adventure, but left some things to be desired.
A gracious gentleman who we took to be the owner came and asked us if everything was fine. We smiled and said yes, which was mainly true.
We quite enjoyed the flavors and if we return, our side will definitely be
just plain cabbage which we felt was badly needed. The tacos are quite small and cabbage on the side allows for more space for shrimps and fish!
