Review Sutters Mill Simi Valley

Sutters Mill has been around for a while out here. It is a transplant from Mission Hills where it stood since 1958. I avoided it because rumor was that they were in some way associated with Stray Steer the worst steak restaurant ever. Stray Steer is THE reason people laugh at "food in Simi Valley."

The restaurant was redone tremendously from the old chinese restaurant that it was before. It is really beautiful now. It is decorated to look like a gold rush type restaurant where the servers dress in fancy hoop skirts etc.

After seeing the menu online we decided to take a shot at it tonight. We ordered a basket of fried zuchinni, 12 ounce sirloin, a half order of bb ribs with no sauce (dont ask why) for the wife, stuffed baked potato, green beans and two peach cobblers.

The zucchini was good, dressed in cheese topping. The salads were wonderful-excellent salad dressings very thick and rich in flavor. With the salad came a bread basket with just plain old warm white bread and softened butter instead of the solid frozen butter pats I dont like, The bread was nothing special.

The sirloin was a nice piece of meat and it arrived exactly as I ordered it but it had no flavor. I cook my beef with garlic powder, onion powder etc but those seasonings were not to be found anyplace. The wife suggested that I use the Lee and Perrins or the A-1 which helped me along. The stuffed potato was stuffed with cheese, bacon bits and sour cream but it too was plain and flavorless. How can that be? The green beans were simply steamed or boiled in water-FLAVORLESS! Thank G-d for salt. It would be unfair to comment on the ribs ordered with no sauce because in my opinion ribs need sauce. If ribs are ordered wrong they will come out wrong. It isnt their fault.

The peach cobbler was not at all peachy. It was a decent sized cobbler of sweet dense cobbler crust possibly created with oatmeal.

Total bill was $55.00 plus tax and tip.

One added plus-there is no charge to split an entree. Add something from the a la carte menu and they toss in soup or salad free. Yes I know- if the food is bad who cares what is free.

Will I return? yes- to give it another shot. It is local and I Iike local and the service was excellent. In looking at the patrons you can see that SM is similar to the Sherman Room and other places in that the patrons like it based on what it was back since 1958 and not what it is now. It is nostalgic I guess.
