Review: Via Sforza (Westport)

I had one of the best overall restaurant experiences I've had in years last night at Via Sforza in Westport. It hit that ever-important triad for me of food, service, and ambiance. If you’ve ever passed by, you know it has a stone, almost castle like appearance on the outside; the décor inside continues in that charm and is decorated in very warm, Tuscan tones. Food was terrific – started with the artichoke appetizer, which was hearts braised in white wine and garlic with a touch of tomato. Split two entrees with hubby – one chicken sautéed with Portobello mushrooms and hot cherry peppers in a Marsala wine sauce. Not at all like chicken Marsala – more akin to a scarpariello. Fairly spicy, and terrific. We also had an excellent spaghetti (thought it was odd that it was not linguini, but whatever) in red clam sauce. Briny, garlicky, and delicious. For dessert I had an Italian cheesecake (waiter mentioned all desserts were house made). Great cheesecake – heavy on the citrus flavor, which was very refreshing. In the end it was around $75 before tip for one app, 2 entrees, 2 desserts, and one glass of wine, which I thought was a veritable bargain considering the quality of the food, service, and atmosphere. Can’t wait to return!
