REVIEW: Rockenwagner Restaurant

With friends, I decided to check out Rockenwagner before it closed on 01/14.

Anyway, here are my thoughts on the food. As we were waiting to order, we were served two kinds of bread. Both were warm and soft. One was more of a french bread or maybe sourdoughh? The other was more of a grain bread with hazel nuts? Of the two, I liked the grain bread more. It had a nice sweet, nutty taste to it. I had to restrain myself from eating all of it.

For a starter, I ordered their soup of the day, which happened to be a lobster bisque. It came with one grilled shrimp in the bowl, which somehow just didn't jive for me. Not that I don't like shrimp. In fact, I love shrimp, but somehow I don't think it added much to the soup overall.

As for the soup, I liked the overall flavor, but found the soup to be a little saltier than I would have liked plus it was a very thin soup. I would have liked a creamier consistency and texture.

For their starters, one friend ordered the warm cherry tomato salad with crusted goat cheese and pine nut vinaigrette and the other friend ordered the mixed green salad with avocado, scallions, basil, jicama,
tomatoes and sherry vinaigrette. While the one friend liked the goat cheese, the peeled, cooked cherry tomatoes just didn't work for her. She would have preferred raw, cold cherry tomatoes with that goat cheese. From the other friend, she mentioned how her salad was over dressed, but I wasn't quite sure if
she enjoyed the salad otherwise.

My entree was halibut wrapped in bacon and came with Chanterelle mushrooms, cherry tomatoes and corn blinis. I absolutely loved the corn blinis. It had a nice texture and it also did have whole kernels of corn cooked with it. I could have just eaten that and
would have been happy. The sauce was also good, although I wish I would have had more of it so that could have poured some on the halibut. While I liked the smoky flavor that the bacon gave to the halibut, the halibut itself was very dry and seemed overcooked to me. I think it had more moisture to it, I would have liked it much better.

The other entrees ordered were the wild boar stew with pretzel dumplings and lingonberries and the original Röckenwagner pretzel burger with caramelized onions, melted Swiss cheese and fries. Both were a thumbs up.

For dessert, I had the lemon filled crepes gratin. I really liked this dessert, but it was very wet in the sense that there was so much filling that it drowned the crepe. Our waitress mentioned how because of how the crepe was cooked it would have nice browned edges,
which was very appealing. I really enjoyed the tang of the dessert, but would have gave it even more of a thumbs up if it was just a bit drier. By the way, I had a taste of their homemade creme fraiche ice cream from one one of the other desserts ordered and wow, that was one of the best ice creams I've had in
awhile. If and when Rockenwagner opens up again, I would go back just for the creme fraiche ice cream.

The other dessert ordered was the chocolate beignets with sour cherries and creme fraiche ice cream and the two people who ordered them were very happy with what they got.

I wasn't wowed by the food, but perhaps, I'd have better luck with choosing other things from the menu. Overall, a nice restaurant and one I do hope finds a new home.
