Open 6 weeks at 1114 N. Crescent Heights, serving French-Mediterranean cuisine, a terrific location, comfortable place, excellent patio dining, pleasant and knowledgeable staff--that's the good news.
The bad news is that the entire meal was a disaster for all four of us. All the entrees had to be sent back as all arrived cold and there were other problems with the food. The monkfish entree came way oversalted, the steak entree was "greasy", the only word that comes to mind, and the lima beans that accompanied it were uncooked enough to be called raw. Two of chose the "seafood cataplana", their version of bouillabaisse and it, on top of coming cold, was verging on completely tasteless. I won't even mention the starters as they were more of the same.
The chef, John Jackson, we were proudly told by our server, was "self taught"...well perhaps he skipped a few lessons.
BTW, the four of us are polite and I can safely say, sophisticated diners, and all that followed, sending the food back, and our comments, were conducted in a cordial manner.
So I was surprised when for the first time in my memory, our entire meal including the wine at their insistence, was comped, and yes we left our server a tip equal to the amount of the wine.
The place was packed and I have no idea if our experience was repeated throughout the restaurant. If so, they didn't have a great night.
I think I might go back again if I read enough reviews in the next few weeks that assure our experience won't be repeated. The "pro" reviews on this place, BTW, are "gushing" about how wonderful the food is, so will look forward with interest to future reports on this place.
