Review - Holly Street Bar and Grill - Pasadena

Last night 4 of us went to this place, a stone's throw from Pasadena City Hall. I am told the space used to be a funeral parlor before - the rooms are oddly shaped - so it is entirely possible.

We shared an appetizer - popcorn shrimp with chipotle aioli and wasabi and gari - the shrimp and aioli were good - the wasabi and gari were superfluous.

I had two of their wines on offer by the glass - a merlot and a sangiovese. Nothing to write about.

I had their half portion salad of pan roasted pear, ribbons of goat cheese, and pancetta on salad greens with a raspberry vinaigrette. Good value ($5.50) and good taste.

For dinner I had their Grilled Salmon with Pesto Mashed Potato, Artichoke Hearts, tomato and Basil Tapenade. The fish was a bit dry, but the main complaint was the dish was a bit cold - we had to send the plate back for them to warm the potatoes.

As compensation, they offered free dessert with our order of coffee - we were not really in the mood, so the 4 of us split 2 of their creme brulees - the custard and fresh berries were good, but the caramel crust could have been thicker. With 20% gratuity it came to $55/head - a bit pricey because of the drinks. But it offers an unhurried club like atmosphere for long dinners. I would recommend it.
