Review on Cafe de Paris

My better half and I dined at Cafe de Paris Saturday night for the first time and here are our impressions, for what they are worth.

We did the three course price fixe with wine by the glass. My wife really likes a regular green salad and asked our waitress if the salad special (duck over greens) had lots of greens. The waitress was unsure and asked the kitchen who offered to make a special salad in the French style (just greens with dressing). I had the salad with poached apple and blue cheese. The greens were fresh and crisp but the dressings were totally nondiscript. I must admit that I make a better vinagrette myself.

For dinner I had the beef bolognaise and she had the ribeye with pommes frittes. Both were quite good, but did not blow us away. Dessert was the warm peach and pear cake for me and a chocolate melting cake for my wife. Mine was great when you got to the inner fruit but very dry on the outside - hers were very intense, but she likes it that way.

We both ordered a glass of Cotes de Rhone which was very good, although seemed to be a fairly short pour versus other restaurants of this class. The owner(?) came over and showed us some new French reds that he was pushing, but wanted us to buy a bottle after we had already gotten our first glass. Nice touch, but too late for us to have that much wine.

About half way through dinner I asked our waitress for a second glass of wine which never seemed to arrive. We finally flagged a busboy to ask for our waitress (by this time my wife was ready for a second glass too), but she never showed up until we were finished with dinner (with my glass of wine in her hand, which I declined). We did mention this to the owner on the way out the door in a VERY polite way which he did thank us for.

Not once did anyone come to fill our water glasses until we finally asked for water with dessert. I had coffe and my wife had decaf, which she is convinced was not decaf as she reacts badly to caffeine that late in the day and could not sleep at all Saturday night.

All in all, the atmosphere was very nice for Columbia. The food was okay, the service left much to be desired. We decided that we would give it another try sometime as Columbia really needs some different choices, but I could not recommend it to anyone based on our first visit.
