There's been mixed review on this board about Z Sushi in Alhambra (corner of Garfield/Huntington Dr, near In and Out). My friend wanted to have Japanese on Sat nite so I thought, why not give Z Sushi a try?
Well, I was disappointed by Z. When the waiter took our order, my friend ordered the raspberry sake along with hot tea for both of us. Sake we did get, but the tea never arrived. Stupid me, I should have asked again. IMO, the raspberry sake tasted like Vick Formula 44, very syrupy. I don't know why we ordered that, kick ourselves for that.
My friend ordered their rainbow row and I wanted the grilled chilean sea bass. But they were out of the sea bass. "Sorry, it's a very popular item and we are out of it." I was perplexed, that at 7pm on Saturday nite, they were out of their most popular item. Did they have a rush on it Friday nite? So I decided on the cod. So we sat around and got our miso soup and talked and talked. We talked and talked some more, no food. Since our waiter took our ordered we didn't see him again. We waited probably 1/2 hour (ok, we should have said something earlier) when our waiter, helping another party, happened to turn around to our table and said, "did you get your food yet?" We replied, "still waiting" "Oh my gosh, you didn't get your food?" So he rushed into the sushi bar and kitchen. The rainbow row came out 10 minutes later, we were almost done with the sushi when the cod came out 10 minutes later. Food was ok, the rainbow row as uninspiring, as my friend would say "there's more filler" on there than fish. Cod, wasn't bad. But after waiting for almost 1 hour for the food, anything was going to be good. So we basically finished dinner in 1/2 hour and was all set to go, I have to say Z is consistent, we waited another 1/2 for our bill. Our waiter never came to check how we were doing until we flagged him down for our bill. He said that dessert is on the house (ice cream) because of the delay. But when the dessert was brought out, he only brought out one scoop for us to share (I appreciated dessert on the house, but only one scoop for the two of us; at least one scoope per person would be nice).
Anyway, bottom line is food fair and service poor. Seems like larger party, the waiters paid more attention to. I understand, there's more people and probably more tips/money in it for them but I would appreciate at least coming by the table once in a while
I have this buy one entree get one free from a coupon book for Z Sushi and I don't think I'll even want to use it.
Thanks for letting me share this.
