Reuben"s BBQ Ft. Myers -- Promising

I visit my mom and other loved ones in south Ft. Myers every season, sometimes multiple times. Fortunately, her club has a good kitchen and friendly service. I have sampled burger and bbq joints on 41 and Colonial before, with mixed results.

I read about the "brisket burger" at Reuben's in the News-Press, and went with my mom this Tuesday. Reuben's is on the west side of 41, several blocks north of college. We parked, and saw the smoker belching a lot of smoke. Seating inside was informal picnic table.

I ordered the brisket, my mom ordered the ribs. I said I was not afraid of fat, but the order I received was very thick-sliced, red/pink (not from rare, but from smoke). Very tender, very meaty. My mom got the back ribs -- 5-1/2 (order listed as 4), small but very meaty. A tender but firm bite, fat rendered, not a huge presence from the rub but very good. She got the mac'n'cheese, which I liked, and I got the mashed potatoes and gravy, which were good with some texture and a good gravy. I really liked the light yeast roll; she less so. LOVED the sauces -- a tangy bbq and sweeter were on the table, but the pineapple-habanero bbq sauce was great -- spicy and tasty, loved it. Didn't dare the pineapple-habanero salsa, but will next time.

Arvey, an owner, served us, and she was personable and warm. Besides the bbq, which includes pulled pork and chicken, there is a side to the menu with meat loaf, chicken and dumplings, and other savory items that I look forward to trying.

We shared a dessert -- the bread pudding with caramel and chocolate. Really good. The heat -- must have been from a microwave -- took away any crispiness, but the dish was delicious. I thought it was made from the light, raised rolls, but was told it was croissants.

I'm going to be back next month. You know I will be back here.
