Restaurants/Reservations and computers

Upon making reservations at Michael Jordan's The Steakhouse, it came as a surprise when they knew who I was when I supplied the person taking the reservation with my phone number.

My number is unlisted and I usually give it out to no one, but do for food. :)

I came to realize they had my info (knew who I was) from other times I ate there and they maintain this info on a computer.

Is this something common? I haven't taken much notice before.

Why exactly would a restaurant maintain this info? Along with it, do they maintain what I've spent and eaten in the past? Do they sell any of this information?

Anyone know?
