Restaurant Week recap: Aquavit

Excerpted from an email to a friend... (Rachel is my sister.)

So I had lunch at Aquavit. The Rest Week menu stuff was pretty good, though not overwhelming. The aquavits were fantastic. Regular menu seemed to have changed a bit from when you and I last went (3 years ago?), though the herring plate is still there.

1st course we both had smoked potato soup, with lamb sausage and an herb jus on top. I didn't much care for the soup by itself (though I may throw a potato on my smoker when I do ribs Sunday just to check it out) but with the herbal jus and sausage it was pretty decent. Other choice was an arugulas salad with mushrooms and beans which simply seemed like a waste.

I then had soy-marinated duck with salsify noodles in a anise broth with some invisible eggplant puree. That was pretty tasty, and rich of course. The salsify was the best part. Rachel had crispy salmon with bamboo rice, which was pretty good as salmon (ugh) goes, and a very generous portion.

Desserts were so-so. I had one of the old staples: arctic circle? which was blueberry sorbet with a lemon-not meringe cylinder, always on the menu. Rachel had a warm chocolate cake with a citrus salad. Eh.

Aquavit, though... I was early and had a very tasty pomegranate and sage one while waiting. When we were seated Rachel got espresso/pumpkin which was unbelievably good. I later had a grapefruit-lemongrass aquavit which was almost as good, and went really well with the duck.
