restaurant week lunch at zahav

i usually am not a fan of rw but a friend had a reservation for lunch so we went. i was very pleased with the service and the quality of the food! zahav doesnt do a separate menu for rw- we just got to choose from the regular menu. lunch menu was hummus + salatim for the table, one choice of mezze, one choice of larger grilled dish and one dessert. portions were the same as what is normally served. we were plenty full by the time we finished

- hummus and salatim: hummus tehina with laffa was very good, as always. had the beets, carrots, shaved fennel salad and pickled veggies in salatim. the beets are my favorite- i wish i could order them separately! no surprises here

- mezze: 2 orders of potato latke, 1 order of grilled duck hearts, 1 order of the haloumi and 1 order of the jerusalem kugel. everyone reported that she was very happy with her dish. everything looked great- and those hearts were cooked perfectly. latke was very good- i love those cucumbers on the dish! i would have loved if the latke itself had a bit more salt but thats a small quibble w a very good dish

- al ha'esh: 1 order of the branzino, 2 orders of the duck kebab, 1 order of the mushrooms, 1 order of hanger steak. the mushrooms come with an egg on top, which is not mentioned on the menu but certainly is a delicious surprise. the hanger steak was reported to have been better than expected- it was eaten so i assume it was good! my branzino was terrific- skin was super crisp and the fish was cooked perfectly. i was very happy with this dish

- dessert: tried the rugelach, baklava and caramel semifreddo. i think the rugelach is the clear winner among the desserts on the current menu. the turkish coffee ice cream it comes with is amazing! the semifreddo was very good but a bit tricky to share since it's sandwiched between 2 pistachio cookies and it's pretty tough to break those w/o squishing the semifreddo.

drinks: whisky harif and marble rye cocktail. both are fantastic- whisky harif is my vote for favorite cocktail in the city right now. the quality of their drinks makes zahav an excellent candidate for happy hour.

overall a very nice experience- and one that far-exceeded my expectations for restaurant week! we got coupons for $10 ar zahav and $10 at percy st upon our next visits- everyone gets coupons with the check i think. we had plenty of food and i felt this was a good deal at $20 for lunch.
