Restaurant review: Bare Vestland in Bergen

My husband and I were in Bergen, Norway on May 1, 2016 for one night following a cruise. I had searched the boards before leaving on our trip but not much was available on Bergen. As I have benefited greatly over the years from advice from others on Chowhounds, I wanted to return the favor.

After researching on various sites and the fact that a lot of restaurants are closed on Sunday, I decided on Bare Vestland in the Bryggen area which was only a short stroll from our hotel. I made reservations prior to leaving home. The process was easy and I received a prompt reply.

I wanted to experience Norwegian cuisine and the menu at Bare Vestland fit the bill superbly as it is a Norwegian "tapas" style restaurant. The restaurant is down a few steps from street level but still has views out of the windows. This gives it a homey and casual atmosphere. The service is friendly yet professional. Our waitress spoke English and was more than happy to explain the menu and make suggestions. We decided to go with the 6 course menu with the chef deciding what to serve us. This included 6 tapas as well as bread. The bread is delicious and is served with an oxtail butter. Our dished were as follows: Smoked Mackerel with Carrots and Chives, Cured Ling Fish with Cauliflower and Dill, Lambs Tongue with Broccolini, a Veal Heart "Taco" which was the special that night, Plukkfisk (a comfort food of mashed potatoes mixed with flaked cod garnished with leeks and bacon) and a plate of three local cheeses served with seeded crackers and apple compote. This was served at a relaxed pace and the portions were plenty to share without leaving you too full.

They offer a large selection of beers and wines by the glass. We each had three glasses including a Pecorino from Italy, a nice Gruner Veltliner and a Chablis from France.

The entire meal, including wine and a tip was around $200 for the two of us and well worth it. We would not hesitate to dine there again!
