I decided to be a pioneer and went to the new Five
last night. I called ahead and told them I needed to be out of there in under an hour, and they said they'd alert the server. I was in the bistro part; the 'fine dining' part is not open yet. I had an excellent meal of 3 appetizers- a duck breast salad which was recommended by the server; I've never had a duck breast salad before even though I've noticed it on many menus over the past several years- it had about 5 slices of medium rare totally succulent duck breast and the sauce involved lobster. You know what, every so often I find a place that has unusual very creative combinations in their dishes, and I don't even totally know exactly what is in them, but I love them. There is some kind of trust that gets set up where I drop my normally control-freak personality and just savor the food. This is that kind of place.
So I'm sorry I can't tell you exactly what was in all of this. I had a soup made from 3 lettuces and creme fraiche that was a beautiful pale green, and had
a little cayenne bite, excellent. And a salad with salsify, fennel, some really good marinated finely chopped shallots and greens. Very good whole wheat/potato bread and sweet butter came with the meal. I passed on dessert but did get a tiny cinnamon sugar doughnut with my check, very good.
I was amazed at how accomodating everyone was about my time constraints- I felt like the whole staff had been told about my needs and were super friendly and helpful about it. Also a rare thing- the noise level was low enough to have a conversation- this is a disappearing quality in my opinion. So , thumbs up!
