Reserving a table in france, rules?

I heard that if you reserve a table in a restaurant in paris and possibly elsewhere in france, you are entitled to that table for the evening? so if you arrive late, you don't lose the table. is this true?

what are the rules/laws? and does it apply evenly to bistros/brasseries as well?
