So I just called Markt, in the West Village, to make a reservation for a party of 7. First they required a credit card number to hold the reservation. Then they asked for a phone number. And then they told me I'd have to call back the day before to confirm.
What's the point? If they've got my credit card number, they shouldn't care whether I show up or not, since they are implying that they'll charge me for a missed reservation. Why then require me to confirm?
I won't bother to ask why, if they've got my phone number, they don't call _me_ to verify that I'm coming.
But I do wonder what purpose they think this ritual serves.
