Repost from not about food: What has happened to Mexican food restaurant tortilla chips?

Maybe this is just a Midwest thing but I have noticed in an ever increasing number of Mexican food restaurants that the complimentary tortilla chips are barley edible these days. I long for the days when the chips were thin, salty and warm and all we seem to get anymore are unsalted, heavy, cold chips. I suppose it is easier to ship the more substantial chips but please tell me, do the tortilla chips of my youth still exist in restaurants anywhere in the United States?
