Reporting back from Kennebunk trip (long)

I just returned from a two night trip to Kennebunk. With the fresh snow it was beautiful, and we had some good eats too.

On the way up on 1/1 we stopped at the Maine Diner for a late lunch. The menu was overwhelmingly long. I was in a breakfast food mood, so I got an omlet with vegetables. It was fine, but not the best I've had. The homefries it came with were pretty good. The blueberry pancakes that another diner was eating looked wonderful, and I kind of wished I had ordered those. My boyfriend seemed to really enjoy his clam chowder (I don't like seafood, so I didn't taste it). A cute place, and enjoyable overall.

For dinner on 1/1 we went to Allison's Restaurant. I ordered the Bourbon Chicken & Vegetable Kabobs. I thought that I might have ordered poorly, but the kabobs were delicious - the chicken was very flavorful, charred on the outside but juicy on the inside. Yum. BF got the lobster roll and enjoyed it. Once again I didn't try it, but his fries were very good. We split blueberry pie for dessert, which was good, if not memorable.

For lunch on 1/2 we went to Federal Jack's. Still full from our B&B's delicious breakfast, I just ordered Jack's Waldorf Salad, greens topped with chicken salad, blue cheese, apples, grapes, walnuts. This was probably the worst meal I had - the chicken salad was overwhelmingly mayonaise-y and cheesy, and some of the grapes were actually moldy. Yuck. BF got the Grilled Crab and Havarti sandwich, which looked very tasty. Really good fries again.

For dinner, we headed to Bandaloop. I really enjoyed this restaurant. The atmosphere was really great - dim (maybe almost too dim), kind of funky, romantic, but laid-back. The bread was very tasty. I started with a salad of romaine, cucumbers, carrots, and sunflower seeds, with a gingery dressing. It was very fresh-tasting and perfectly dressed. BF got an appetizer of sweet oatnut rounds with brie and an apple-cranberry relish. It was very interesting. I'm not the biggest fan of brie, but it was a nice combination of flavors. For my main, I got the tempeh with citrus-ginger sauce (it was from the part of the menu where the diner mixes and matches protein and sauce). It was okay, but the sauce was kind of overwhelming and too sour. Maybe I just didn't select a good sauce for tempeh, but I think next time I will choose from a different part of the menu. BF got shrimp with a mustard sauce, and I think he felt similarly about it. For dessert, we split the apple crisp, which was really wonderful - it was served hot in a ramekin, with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream in a separate dish. The topping was very oaty and flavorful, and the apple minimally sweetened. Just the way I like it.

On our way out today we stopped into Market Day. We just grabbed some bottled drinks, but their prepared foods were quite enticing.

I had really hoped to try out Joshua's, which was highly recommended here, but it was closed (reopens tomorrow).
