Report: Tacos Estrella in the sorta Fruitvale?

Nobody's mentioned it for a while, and I had lunch there today.

Location: If you set your GPS to 4169 Alameda Ave, you'll get there, although that's not an official address. It's near the Home Depot, and the entrance to the dirt lot is on Alameda Ave in Oakland (confusing, eh?). Technically neither Fruitvale nor Jingletown. Has anyone eaten at the friendly little market that serves food in Jingletown? Haven't been there in ages...

As Ruth Lafler has reported, they do have an extensive menu. I think it seems more like a little restaurant than a taco wagon... food takes a bit longer to come out too. Many items for future investigation, including atole de chocolate for $1.50

I had a carne asada torta ($5) and al pastor taco ($1.50). They charge sales tax on top of the advertised prices.

The torta bread was crispy and fresh. Decent amount of fillings with avocado and sour cream. No lettuce and tomato though, which seemed odd to me.

Al pastor wasn't particularly smoky or spicy, but the meat quality was good. I didn't see any evidence of an Al Pastor spit, so maybe that explains the absence of the smokiness. I don't think I'll put their taco in the rotation...

Overall, the food seemed to lack the more powerful spice and flavors of my favorite places. Worth taking a look at with a group so you can sample and report back on the extensive menu...

Open till about 4:30 M-F, 3pm Sat, no hay en domingo...

My personal sales tax gripe: Street food and food from trucks, wagons, carts and backs should be tax included... I realize state regulations treat them as restaurants, so all food is taxed. But it's nice when it's tax included so you're not handling pennies just to buy a taco...
