Report- Santa Monica suggestions

Thanks for your chowhound suggestions for our Santa Monica Weekend. We did not get to many but here's what we did.

Broadway Diner--this had just opened when I moved back to SF. I do remember a killer mushroom barley soup. This was perfect for breakfast. We did not want to wait to be seated because of the hordes, but bad idea. They seat quickly. Instead we ordered at the deli counters for the numerous tables in the front, that were up for grabs. Very puzzling that some of these tables had waiter service. My sister ordered a plate of bagels and smoked salmon, that was great--she did ask them to add capers. I ordered a bagel cream cheese and a couple pastries for the teen and it came in a bag, untoasted, unsliced. Hmmm, sis had a beaut toasted bagel and a plate that included onion and tomato. Well hers was 11 bucks and mine was 1.10. I 'borrowed' some of her goodies and we were all happy.

We also ate dinner here Friday night because we were starving and it was late. I had excellent Lake Superior Whitefish, perfectly done with a mustard sauce on the side that was also good with the asparagus. The other veggies on the plate were large, ugly naked hunks of carrot, zucchini, and fennel. My sisters chix ravioli was awful. Tough, thick dough and a dense interior. One girl loved her chicken pot pie. Desserts to go were pretty good. Berry tart, and a very creamy lemon merengue (?SP?) pie.

Rockenwagner - we had a lovely dinner on the patio, in the area usually reserved for wine and app's. (no reservation and a full Sat night). Decadent ate too much. I had a very unusual cold garlic soup with grapes and almonds pureed in. Then surf and turf, the lobster was served with roast corn relish. Salmon Napolean with potato and spinach in basil sauce kept sis happy, as did the beet salad with a killer herbed goat cheese. Melon and black forest ham salad and grilled lobster and cheese sandwiches kept the teens happy.

Killer Shrimp--not quite as good as remembered. Lots of shrimp, but not too sweet or succulent. Broth a little watery. Still we had fun and the sweet potatoe-pecan pie is TDF.

We swung by Pasadena for the musuem, great, but ate chain at Crocadile Cafe (not my call). I was shocked and horrified at how chained-out Old Town was--what a turn off (I left So. Pas in 1993). This is what SF would look like if we didn't fight the chains. You might as well go to a mall for all the character that is left. When I was there it was mostly charming indi places.
