Report: Fukui Sushi in Santa Monica *GOOD*

Erika in SM | Nov 14, 200410:31 PM

Fukui Sushi recently opened in our neighborhood and our dinner there tonight was great. We want it to survive despite its odd location, thus this report.

When I say "odd location," I mean that it shares space -- literally -- with an American-style coffee shop in the Albertson's shopping center on Lincoln at Ocean Park Blvd. That is, you walk into the restaurant, and the left side is American, the right side Japanese.

My husband and I had an assortment of rolls plus some straight sushi. The salmon, yellowtail and halibut sushi was wonderful, very fresh, very soft. The rice was slightly warm and well seasoned.

Of the rolls, my favorite was the Rock & Roll, with tuna, salmon and crab inside, wrapped in cucumber instead of seaweed (no rice). We also had the Hot Nite Roll, with shrimp tempura and crab inside, spicy tuna on top; the Oh Baby! roll, with spicy albacore and cucumber inside, wrapped with tuna (no rice or seaweed); and the Spicy Tuna Tempura roll, whose composition I can't exactly remember.

The prices were very reasonable: Each order of sushi was less than $4, and the rolls were $7-9 each. Our whole meal for two extremely hungry bottomless pits (when it comes to sushi, anyway) was $60, including a generous tip.

Go there! Patronize! Keep our local sushi place open!
