POLLACK JOHNNY'S - First of all, it takes chuzpah to name a place that, even a link joint. But oh what a link joint! This was out first trip to Baltimore. And, frankly, we were put off by the decrepitude of the Lexington Market neighborhood and the prevalence of cheap, unappetizing food stalls. But all was redeemed after we had one (and then a second) spicy Polish sausage with the works. Definitely want to go back and try more varieties. Grade: A-

FAIDLEY'S - Of course, the natural follow-up to a couple OF sausages is... oysters! The crabcake station was closed, so we opted for mega-oysters. The oyster bar is definitely down and dirty, with lots of accompaniments like horseradish, lemon, tobasco, etc. Not crazy about the oysters: too gritty, too big. But I still like the character of this place a lot. Will return for the 'cakes. Grade: B-

AFGHAN KEBAB (S. Charles St., downtown)- This place is great! The kebabs are succulent and juicy and truly flavorful. Everything is grilled to order. I think I had the chicken, lamb and kofta. The hot sauce is outstanding too. Better than anything I've had in my hometown NYC. Grade: A

KAWASAKI CAFE (Fells Point) - I like the traditional tables and love the charming location at the pier. There seemed to be not even one Japanese either dining in or working at the restaurant. No matter. I like this place for its huge selection of fun and
funky rolls, some cooked, some raw, lots of them containing some combination of crab and mayonaise. Grade: B+

OBRYCKI'S - After priming ourselves for what we thought was traditional excellence, we were disappointed. Perhaps we should've gotten the steamed crabs. Instead we opted for a sampling of lots of stuff -- cakes, broiled fish, etc. - none of which was very good. In fact, the concept, preparation and presentation of most dishes brought back memories of childhood eat-outings in the 1970's. And that's not a good thing. Nevertheless, one can hardly condemn such a well-meaning old place like this. Grade: C

SABATINO'S - Talk about the 70s! This place is positively trapped in that decade of "Italian-American family restaurants." I had the veal ragu which, after the addition of hefty amounts of salt, black pepper, red pepper, and parmesian cheese, actually was pretty good. Grade: C

By the way, we stayed at Celie's Waterfront Inn, Fells Point, which is a great inn in a great neighborhood.
