Removing spots in glassware when hand dishwashing?

Seitan | Dec 21, 201610:44 AM     3

I don't have a dishwasher and wash all my dishes by hand. I recently bought some nice wine glasses and wanted to get them nice and sparkling clean for guests. But try as I might, I can't get seem to get the spots out of them the way an automatic dishwasher can. This has been true for all my clear glassware, but it's especially annoying with my stemware which I really want to be spot free.

I have pretty hard water where I live. I've tried rinsing my glassware in hot water and vinegar, even vinegar alone. I've also tried baking soda, baking soda + vinegar. I've also tried rinsing in lemon juice and water. Nothing. After I've dried the glassware carefully with a terry towel by hand, there are still a few spots and some residual cloudiness. If I let the glassware air dry it's even worse.

I've been looking at the ingredients in automatic dishwashing detergent for clues as to how it achieves spot free results. Most brands have at least a few common ingredients: sodium percarbonate, sodium carbonate (i.e. washing soda), hydrogen peroxide, and enzymes.

Does anyone know if I could just use automatic dishwashing detergent instead of dishwashing liquid in a sink full of hot water? Or perhaps just rinse my glassware in it? Some brands have a warning to avoid contact with skin, so I'm not sure if this would be feasible.

Or, if I can get the chemistry right, is there a DIY solution?
