Recently, somebody asked about dessert souffles and La Petite Auberge was mentioned. I posted about eating there some time ago and really liking it. Others mentioned enjoying it as well.
Tonight I took a friend out for her birthday dinner. I considered various places, and then La Petite Auberge popped into my mind, so that was where we went. It was just as I remembered. Cozy and charming, very comfortable. The food was excellent. The duck was moist without being fatty, with perfect crisp skin, and the chocolate souffle was as delicious as can be. My friend left a bit of hers on her plate because she was too full to finish -- here I am, an hour later, wishing I'd gobbled up the rest, after finishing my own.
The service was perfect. Our waiter was engaging, helpful (not to mention completely patient when we were really indecisive about something) and efficient. The entire staff was friendly as well. On the way out we met a very charming man that we think was the owner.
I love that this place is unchanged, year after year. In a city like New York if a place remains unchanged without going downhill (in food, service or decor) it makes me feel so content and satisfied. I can't wait to return.
