Restaurants & Bars 2

Regal (formerly Ruby's)

My mother's cousin recommended Regal and the two of us went for dinner this evening. We arrived at 5:45 and a bit of a flag went up when there was only one table of two finishing up their dinner. It took us awhile to decide on what to eat and we settled on beef tenderloin in a black pepper sauce and sauteed and deep-fried scallops with vegetables. I say settled as nothing on the menu really jumped out at us.

Awful would sum up the beef. The dish was barely hot, the sauce was bland with no taste of pepper. The texture of the meat was odd, as if some sort of tenderizer had been added, not a pleasant mouth feel at all. Zero Wok Hay. Fail.

The scallop dish however, was quite good. Juicy, flavourful and piping hot. I've never had deep-fried scallops in a Chinese restaurant and these were great. The sauteed scallops were mixed with very fresh snap peas, king oyster mushroom, and ginger with a slight wok hay taste, not oily at all. Fantastic.

The service was a bit sullen and indifferent. The waitress walked by our table a few times without noticing our teapot lid was tilted up for a water refill and we had to call out for her attention on the fourth pass. We sat for quite sometime obviously done eating and had to ask for the bill. We were the only ones in the room for most of our meal ( a large party of about 15 drifted in towards the end of our meal) which really didn't
help with the ambiance.

The bill was a bit of a surprise though. It was only $36.16. On the menu the tenderloin was $18 and the scallops were $20, we had one bowl of rice between us so I figured about $45 tax in. They automatically gave a 20% senior's discount and then didn't charge any tax. Nice!

One thing that really bugged me though, and put a bad taste in my mouth, (and speaking of that, the meal was a bit of an msg overload, tongue is really tingling now) was the manager who brought the bill and did not return with my change. She also stood there after she brought the bill, waiting for me to pay. I really dislike this, it makes me feel rushed and like they think I'm going to dine and dash. Anyways, I gave her two 20s. I had a 5 but I didn't want to leave $45 but I wanted to tip more than $3.84. When it became quite evident she wasn't returning my change we left and they lost out on the extra tip. They've also lost out on future visits. There are far too many superior restaurants closer to home.

ps. Charles Yu - it's definitely not worth the drive from Richmond Hill!
