Red's was the best lobster roll I've ever had. Thanks, Oceanpt, for the recommendations. I wanted to get to Boothbay Harbor, but could not find the time. Instead, we drove up 1 to Wiscasset and had the previously described lobster roll.
Definitely pricey at $18.50, but one look at the sandwich helps relieve the sticker shock. Easily a whole small lobster on a toasted bun with no mayo, butter, or anything else. Just huge, cold chunks of lobster that are perfectly firm, sweet, and cooked with appropriate salt. I chose mayo instead of drawn buttter on the side, and was very happy with the results.
Fried clams were very good too, but not worth the drive or the $16.50 in my opinion -- the way they were battered, they were more clam fritters than fried clam strips and they were certainly tasty.
We also had lobster rolls in Bath, at Gilmore's Sea Foods. These were adequate, but not exceptional in any way. A buttery, toasted roll was nice, but in the end, I tasted bread, not lobster. Their fried shrimp is very good though.
Thanks again for the advice!
