Redondo Beach Seafood excursion

(First off, this is my second post and I don't know if I should start a new thread for this or add it to a super-old thread...someone let me know the etiquette around here...Thanks.)

My wife, son and I went to the Redondo Beach Pier yesterday in search of a "Fisherman's Wharf"-type seafood experience. I had read a lot of old threads here that narrowed our choices to a few places, namely "Ocean Seafood" (which I believe is actually called Oceanside Seafood, unless I was at the wrong place) and "Quality Seafood."

I had read one post that basically said that Ocean Seafood was superior but that many people might be hesitant to eat there due to the Chinese lettering on their sign, so I heeded that advice and we took a seat at a table at Ocean Seafood. The menu was presented to us and, being our first time there, we didn't really know how things worked. All prices are by the pound, such as $9.99 a pound for live crab, $16.99 a pound for live lobster, etc. The waiter was not exactly friendly and told us that a small lobster would probably cost around $45. Seeing we had made this trip in search of some good, inexpensive seafood, suddenly we felt maybe we were in the wrong place. We left.

We walked over to Quality Seafood (on the boardwalk portion of the pier complex...Ocean Seafood was on the pier itself) and asked what the Maine lobster special was that their banner touted. It was a whole lobster and an ear of steamed corn for $10. Perfect! We ordered three orders and chose to take them from the already-cooked-and-waiting stockpile rather than wait 25 minutes for a still-living lobster. The lobsters weren't huge but were well worth $10. They were served with melted butter. (Truthfully, the corn was way overdone, but for $10, I'm not going to complain about an ear of corn.)

I then went back over to the same guy who sold us the lobsters and asked for a recommendation on some clams. He scooped up almost two pounds of Littlenecks and steamed them with wine sauce. This cost us a little under $10 and we also had a couple of oysters on the half shell -- Stellar Bay was the variety if I remember correctly. (I'm not an oyster connoisseur but these were very good.)

The only misfire of the night was from the snack bar section of Quality Seafood when we ordered the popcorn shrimp. They were overcooked and tasteless other than the smoky taste of the deep fryer.

Looking back, the whole night cost us about $65 including a couple beers, a couple Cokes and a whole bunch of good live shellfish. I don't know if the $10 special is offered frequently (I meant to ask, but forgot) or what, but we had fun and will definitely do it again. I heartily endorse Quality Seafood.

The only bummer of the night was the fact the Redondo Fun Factory (arcade) was closed, despite the fact the parking stub said it's open daily.
