recs for Hearst Castle/SLO area?

Going to be driving down to see Hearst Castle and eat for a couple of days next week -- probably dinner, a full day, and breakfast (although we might make it two full days).

What I'm looking for is good, interesting food; don't really care about atmosphere, don't need to eat steak and lobster every day. SO stays away from seafood. Mexican, Indian, veggie, eclectic, whatever. Prefer places that are quiet, and not packed with kids.

From here, ba.food, and a bunch of google searches I came up with a full list of restaurants -- but most were only recommended by one person. Three, though, were recommended by many, and looked good to me. These were:
- Robin's in Cambria
- Chile Peppers in SLO
- Mo's Smokehouse in SLO

Big Sky Cafe in SLO also looked okay, but I'm leery about the kid factor (based on the number of "families" that recommended it, vs single folks). Harada Japanese in Morro Bay also got a good review, and might be a nice lunch spot.

Any other "can't miss" places? Especially of the "good food, reasonable prices, mostly locals rather than tourists" bent. Especially nearer to Hearst Castle. (yeah, I don't ask for much! ;-))

Another question: where should we stay? Before you complain that this isn't food related, we're going to prefer to eat at places convenient to get to, and don't want to spend the entire trip redriving the same stretches of roads... or switching hotels every day. If we stay near Hearst, we probably won't get to SLO for more than one meal... two if we detour on the way in.

Thanks...
