recs for casual good wine country day trip?

Jane | Aug 9, 2004 01:51 PM

I have parents coming to town this weekend, and as I've done about everything else with them in town, thought I'd take them to the VA wine country for a day trip. They are the type to want to take lengthy tours and get to know maybe 2-3 wineries max, and maybe add some antiquing, shopping, in a cute little town. Of course, food is important, and right now I'm tenatively thinking about doing a couple wineries (eating a light cheese/cracker type lunch on the grounds of a winery with a nice setting), then maybe a little shopping, etc. then ending it all with a yummy but not-too-fancy dinner before heading back to DC. Was considering centering on Middleburg and doing a couple of the wineries around there- Crysalis? Piedmont? Swedenburg? Others that aren't too far? What (if anything)is worth eating in Middleburg? Any other little towns better to center around? I'm willing to get up to 1.5-2 hrs from DC max. Anyone want to help plan my itinerary or give suggestions? As you can tell, I'm pretty open- just want to eat some good food, drink some wine, and see some countryside.
