Recipe for *real* Maraschino cherries?

I recently saw a magazine article (unfortunately, can't remember where) that offered a 19th-Century-style recipe for Maraschino cherries, which in those days were based on Marasca cherries macerated in some kind of liquor. The recipe substitutes North American cherry varieties easily found in supermarkets for Marascas.

I am not interested in recreating those unnaturally bright-red and -green supermarket Maraschino cherries sold by the jar, a sad (and to my tastebuds, disgusting) legacy of Prohibition.

Does anyone else recall seeing this recipe, or have another one?
