On the near-East Side, on the southwest corner of 12 Mile Road and Dequindre, in Madison Heights, an area I get to only twice a year (I live in Brighton, but my dentist is in Warren, see), is a real live Hong Kong-style Oriental BBQ joint! And I thought you had to go to Windsor (like on Wyandotte Street) to get this stuff.
The name of the place, surprisingly, is Oriental BBQ. Call them at 248-616-9616. Open everyday, including holidays, 10am - 8:30pm, but not on Tuesdays, unless you call or it's a holiday. That's what they said.
In true Oriental BBQ style, hanging in the shop were whole pig, duck (several kinds), chicken, pork, and ribs. Yes! The pig was whole, at least when I got there--two big hunks were lopped off while I was there to serve two other customers. There were also steamer trays of small intestine, tripe, and other unrecognizables. The wall listed some 20 daily items and a couple of weekend-onlys.
My lunch feast consisted of 1/2 BBQ duck ($7.25), a large side of rice ($1), and a pop ($0.80). This is really a carry out place, but I ate in at one of the two tables (complete with folding chairs). And I walked out with another couple of pounds of BBQ pork.
And while I was there the owner gave me a taste of the pig. The meat was as succulent as could be and the cracklin' skin was sublime.
My order came with a side of "sauce" which, as near as I can tell, is the fat and juices collected from the meat as it hangs. Additional "sauce" is $.25 each, but I didn't need any--there was nothing dry about my duck. I poured the leftover "sauce" on the rice after I finished up the duck. Delish!
I guess I'll be getting over in that direction more often now!
