Where are the REAL GYROs in Hartford CT area?

Question

I am searching for REAL GYROs. Real Gyros are made from pressed lamb carved from a spit and not from the oval prefab chicken, beef and lamb patties fine places like Tapas and Effies disappointingly try to pass off.
 
Do I really need to drive to New Haven? Please help.

Everybody (but me) seems to love Tapas on New Britain Ave. in West Hartford. Try calling them to find out what's in the gyros. I just don't remember and I don't know how they should taste.

I'm not aware of anywhere in Connecticut where you can get REAL gyros (Richardson mall won't be your place either). It's all that processed pressed stuff. If you know of someplace in New Haven to get them, let us know.

Only place near me is in Shop-Rite Plaza on Rt 6 in Bristol, but (a) guess it's not real, and (b) dont care for fries ON mine

Real Greek gyros are not made with lamb, although that would be tasty if cooked the same way they cook the pork used in a real gyro. It is made with seasoned strip of pork piled on a upright spit, until it forms a huge chunk of pork. As it spins on the spit a electric shaving knife is used to trim off the top layer of perfectly cooked, succulent pieces of meat, which is piled high on the pita bread along with fresh tomatoes and shredded lettuce and tzatziki sauce. Some people have added french fries and mustard in the last 10 years or so, but I'm a traditionalist. This is how it is done in Athens and Thessaloniki and other areas of Greece I've visited. There maybe other regional ways of doing it, but no self respecting Greek would ever serve that lamb, beef, and pork blended meatloaf served in the US in thin 5 inch tasteless strips.

So you 're saying that some have added fries and mustard 10 years ago, or about FOUR years after the original post was made.

Sad what has become of foodie conversation around here, having to dredge up 16+ year old discussions.
