Raven & Peach for Restaurant Week

Went to the Raven & Peach in Fair Haven for restaurant week menu last night.

First the decor is dark which I always find discouraging since it makes it hard to see the food. Then the glasses were dirty. Just not washed and dried properly, they had grease stains. Finally, they served the food on pleather (blue vinyl) placemats which is just not classy.

On the to the food. For starters, I had steak tartare which came pre-dressed and tasted a little old, not an encouraging sign with tartare. The accompanying grilled garlic flatbread was actually pita chips, no toast points in sight. My wife had the U-10 scallop, which was perhaps a little underdone and came on a brown sauce of mysterious origin (balsamic glaze according to the menu, which overpowered the scallop).

For the main we both had the flank steak which was delicious and properly done. It came with three spears of asparagus, count em three, and a gummy smoked gouda polenta which tasted alright if you could get past the texture. But the sauce was just not good. It was a brown smear on the plate which was just not appetizing, and it tasted like a bad chipotle barbque sauce out of the bottle.

On the recommendation of the waiter I had a somewhat dry pineapple cake with a pineapple sorbet that actually tasted of mango. My wife had the gelato trio, which again had a funky texture and included a pumpkin spice gelato which overpowered everything else in the bowl.

On the plus side the service was good and we were in and out quickly. Of course we were there at 8:20 on a Thursday night so there were only six other tables busy in the place.

Overall another disappointing restaurant experience at what is supposed to be one of the better places to eat in our area. It's a shame. You think they would make an extra effort on these taster menus to get people to come back.
