Range Life in Livermore

A little background, courtesy of Eater:
“A couple of SF restaurant industry veterans have settled down with Range Life, a new restaurant now open in more affordable Livermore. Sarah Niles, a former manager and wine director at Outerlands, and husband Bill Niles, former co-chef at Tartine Manufactory, joined with another couple — Lauren Heanes, a commercial set designer and native of Livermore, and Waine Longwell, previously of a Brooklyn bar named Alameda — to pursue the new business at 2160 Railroad Avenue, where Range Life is currently open for dinner with a full bar and market component. An all-day format is promised down the line... .”

Made it to Range Life a week ago. Having just moved to Brentwood from the NYC metro area, my husband and I are suffering a bit of withdrawal when it comes to this kind of restaurant. That said, Range Life delivered on all levels: atmosphere (casual, buzzy vibe), service (attentive, knowledgeable and friendly), cocktails (well thought out as opposed to just a bunch of ingredients thrown together) and of course food. Between us we had the beet pickled eggs, crispy lamb belly, pork loin milanesa and grass fed sirloin. All was delicious, thoughtfully prepared with attention to local, seasonal ingredients. To me, the standout was the pork. Pounded flat with a beautifully crunchy breading it was served with an amazing house made hot sauce (a bottle of which we bought from their small market in the restaurant). For dessert we had a chocolate budino which was heavy on the chocolate and light on the sweetness; in other words, perfect. Our hope is that we see more restaurants like Range Life opening in this part of the east bay as more people move out this way.
