Racism in Paris restaurants?

Alexandra | Mar 6, 2002 04:53 PM

Hi, everyone -

My fiance and I are heading to Paris for 6 days at the end of March. We've got a reservation at L'Astrance and I've been perusing the boards for more great-sounding places. What I wanted to know (and perhaps since this isn't about the food it's not appropriate here?) is about racism in fancier Paris restaurants. My fiance is Iranian-American and has been mistaken for Arab and Indian and Mexican at times. He has encountered very little racism in the States (even when we lived in Texas!), but one hears so much about how Arabs are treated in France that we can't help but worry a bit, especially because the waiters seem so condescending anyway (compared to the US). I lived there as a student, but I'm white so of course I can't know what kind of racism a person of some color might face.

Any anecdotes, reassurances, etc?

Thanks!
