question - problems with fudge-making - need help!

I just tried to make maple fudge for the first time and it did not work. I have a good candy thermometer and I let the fudge get to the temperature the recipe specified (238 degrees) but when I cooled and then tried to mix it it got all powdery and is the texture of bread crumbs. What did I do wrong?
