Pumpkin Review

Went to Pumpkin for the second time. First time, right after it opened, we thought it was good but still needed some finishing touches, so we gave it another shot. We had a 9:45 reservation for 2. When we arrived, there were 3 tables set and empty and nobody waiting. For some reason, the hostess asked us to wait while our table was prepared. Two people came in behind us. The hostess greeted and sat them and then went away to do something else, leaving us standing there next to two set and empty tables. If there was only one table, or it was earlier, I would have understood, but given the situation, it was entirely unacceptable.

Finally, our waiter, who was very nice and accommodating, came and sat us. I couldn't help watching the inexplicable hostess tell people to wait outside while multiple tables went unused. WTF? Seemed like she was missing some essential hostess skill. Like she had made a plan well in advance of which reservation was for which table and was going to stick with it come hell or high water. We tried to go there last weekend after Chloe said they weren't seating anymore (at 9:15 -- we're from New York, it's just silly to stop serving that early on a Saturday) There were two tables open and one leaving, nobody waiting, it was 9:45 and clearly they didn't need all of them, and the same hostess said they were full. Sound like she makes a plan and sticks with it.

The food was okay, nothing special. Pricey for what it was. Comparatively, the Last BYO we went to was Marigold and we thought almost everything was incredible. Cheaper too.

In short, I don't think we're going back. Too many better options in that price range. The chef is a really nice guy so I hope it works out for him. I think if the apps were in the $6-$8 range and entrees in the $15-$17 range and they got a new hostess we'd return, but it seemed pretty full so those changes aren't likely to happen.
