Tried four items at this tiny Peruvian spot near the Hippodrome that has a split personality of a down-home place with fancy plating and upscale pricing. Three of the dishes were 'starters' and we had one ceviche.
The ceviche (called 'tiradito 511') is perfect. A tangy, creamy sauce is punctuated with small, almost burnt cancha, cinammon-infused sweet potato, and thick corn kernels as well as plenty of nice pieces of fish. This was a great dish.
I wish I could say the same for the other three. They all looked so much better than they tasted. The tamalito verde was the weakest. Well overpriced for a meager tamale that was too sweet. The causa sampler proves that gussying up mashed potatoes and forming it into fancy shapes doesn't amount to all that much, and the yaquitos dorados (casava fritters) were fairly tame in flavor despite having a lot of ingredients (short rib, raisins, olives,) that seem like they'd provide a punch. The rocote pepper sauce had all the kick.
