PS-N does "Bump" in South Philly Review

Steve | Jun 5, 2004 11:17 AM

I know some of you read Phyllis Stein-Novack's reviews in the South Philly Review. This week's was a doozy. PSN seems to get to most places within a few days opening and rarely, if ever, repeats a review.

This week she reviewed Bump at 13th and Locust Sts. Remember that the SPR audience is generally SOUTH PHILLY residents and the articles and ads are oriented toward this group.

Well PSN mentioned she went to Bump at 6pm and it full of people! It was also noisy. But she loved her Hamburger and pulled pork. What she never mentions - or even hints at - is that Bump is a gay oriented bar with food. Unless you get the hint from her mention that Bump has no "beer on tap" (she was dissapointed), the average SPR reader will - based on her 3 toque review - be real surprised.

I am not gay and patronize restaurants with high gay clientele but I think PSN, and the SPR, were way off base by not mentioning this in her review. Especially since Bump advertises itself in the Philadelphia Weekly and City Paper so you know they are shooting for the large Gay audience in Philly.

While I generally trust her reviews (though she likes things spicy, while I don't) I was real dissappinted in her this week.
