Proofing Box to Activate Yeast Culture and Proof Dough

Flexitarian | Feb 14, 201404:00 PM

I;ve been making home-made pizza dough for a couple years now and want to take it to the next level (and also start making bread) so I bought some yeast cultures from in the US. So, I need a proofing box.

There is a pre-made retail proofing box available for home use but it's a bit small (and expensive) so I am making my own. I have a styrofoam box for the enclosure (which many use), a heating source (pad and lamp - not sure which I'll use) and just need a temperature controller and have not been able to find one. They have ones that have a 3-prong receptacle you can plug your heating source into it but I haven't been able to find one. There's also an STC-1000 temperature controller that many have used and is a bit more elegant as it fits in a electrical gang box and is less expensive at about $25 but I haven't been able to find one in Toronto. Home Depot doesn't carry either. It's available on but I would rather buy it locally from a retailer.

Has anyone here made their own proofing box and know of a source in Toronto for the STC-1000 temperature controller? Also, any advice from those of you who have made your own proofing box would be appreciated.
