Preventing MSG reaction

Does anyone know a strategy for preventing reaction to MSG in food (other than not eating the food, of course)? It's not a problem for me, but my friend, who is Chinese, has promised to take me to a wonderful Chinese restaurant when I visit her in San Francisco, only she had vowed after her last visit not to return because they use MSG in everything. She says she gets a pounding headache shortly after eating the food and can hardly stay awake. I know that some restaurants will omit the MSG upon request, but apparently that didn't work for this place.
