Preserving crunchy when dipped in chocolate

I tried to make a Norwegian snack last night, Smash. They're essentially Bugles dipped in chocolate. Mine taste amazing, but they're not nearly as crunchy as the real thing. Any ideas on how to improve them? I used plain Bugles, Ghiradelli milk chocolate and 1% milk.
