After all your advice, I took a little more than 1/2 lb of vanilla nut coffee beans and ground them very slightly, cracked would be more like it. Then I poured a half gallon of vodka over. Almost immediately it started turning as brown as Kahlua, but I left it overnight anyway. It's really strong, tastes like black coffee. So if you need a last minute gift you could make this up in a few hours. On the other hand, although I've been drinking it(actually you don't feel the alcohol much with all the caffeine) unless you love black coffee you might not like it plain like this. I saved the beans and think I'll make another batch and try sweetening it, I'll call it Coll-lua!
