Pot of Gold, a gem of an Irish discovery (Johns Island, SC)

So excited after my visit last night that I wanted to share. Had dinner at the Fat Hen on Maybank Hwy on Johns Island and went to check out a newly opened Irish pub (or members only club) that I have been hearing about. I wasnt sure if I would be allowed to drink on the first visit as is usually the case with private social clubs. What I found was a gem in a strip center, right next door to Normandy Farms bakery, across the street from the Fat Hen. The owner was behind the bar and welcomed us graciously with a warm irish accent. He suggested a house "shot" called the grandpa to help with digestion- a blend of fernet branca and clontarf irish whiskey- different, but I admit it helped. Here's a kicker- no guiness! and no TVs. The owner, Jerry, explained that he feels that he can get better stout brewed in the U.S. and support local breweries and purveyors. The "craft" beer bottle selection was pretty extensive with 4 draft beers, but he says he is planning on expanding the drafts soon. The wine list looked pretty eclectic for an irish bar with a bunch of Champagne listed. No kitchen, so no food, but Jerry explained that he welcomed folks bringing their own "take away" from local restaurants and said that he will have food trucks on site in the future as well. Overall, a surprising and wonderful treat in a beautiful pub. I filled out an application which promises chess clubs, book clubs and more and officially became a member last night. I highly recommend this place to anyone who likes to have a quality drink without a loud, rowdy atmosphere. Probably now my favorite bar in Charleston
